Google AdSense has officially announced a major upgrade to its anchor ad experience by expanding collapsible anchor ads to desktop devices. The feature, which was previously limited to mobile devices, is now being introduced for screens wider than 1000px to help publishers generate better revenue opportunities from high-value ad demand.

The update was announced on May 21, 2026, and also includes a refreshed naming system for anchor ad controls inside AdSense Auto Ads settings.

What Is Changing With AdSense Anchor Ads?

Google is rebranding the existing “collapsible anchor ads” setting to a new name called “dynamic anchor ads.” According to the company, this new naming structure will act as a unified control for future anchor ad improvements and adaptive monetization experiences.

The desktop rollout allows dynamic anchor ads to support larger-screen formats including responsive display ads and outstream video ads, which are generally considered higher-value advertising formats for publishers.

This means publishers using Auto Ads can potentially see improved monetization opportunities on desktop traffic without making manual changes to ad placements.

Automatic Rollout Begins for Eligible Publishers

Google confirmed that the new desktop dynamic anchor experience will automatically activate for publishers who already have both of the following settings enabled:

  • Collapsible anchor ads
  • Anchor ads on screens wider than 1000px, like desktop

The company is providing a one-month review period before the changes become fully active. Publishers have until June 21, 2026 to review or modify their current settings.

If no action is taken, the updated dynamic anchor ads experience will automatically go live for eligible websites.

Publishers Still Have Full Control

While Google is enabling the feature automatically for eligible users, publishers can still opt out of desktop dynamic anchor ads whenever they want.

To disable the new desktop anchor experience, publishers need to:

  • Sign in to their AdSense account
  • Open the Ads section
  • Select Edit next to the preferred website
  • Open Overlay formats
  • Disable “Allow anchor ads on screens wider than 1000px, like desktop”
  • Click Apply to site

Why This Update Matters

Desktop traffic continues to remain valuable for many publishers, especially news, blog, and content-based websites. By expanding dynamic anchor ads to larger screens, Google is aiming to improve engagement and overall ad performance while keeping the user experience adaptive.

The update also signals Google’s continued focus on automated monetization tools that require less manual optimization from publishers.

For website owners already relying heavily on Auto Ads, this rollout could bring additional earnings opportunities from desktop visitors in the coming months.

Final Thoughts

Google AdSense’s new dynamic anchor ads for desktop represent another major push toward smarter automated monetization. The combination of collapsible behavior, responsive layouts, and support for premium ad demand could help publishers improve revenue generation with minimal effort.

Publishers should review their settings before June 21, 2026 to decide whether they want to participate in the desktop rollout or opt out of the experience.
