India’s New SIM Binding Rule Brings Major Changes to WhatsApp, Telegram & All Messaging Apps

India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has announced a major policy shift that will impact how every Indian uses popular messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Snapchat, and similar services. Under the newly introduced SIM Binding Rule, all messaging apps must remain strictly connected to the same SIM card that was used during the initial signup process. This update marks one of the most significant security enhancements ever introduced for digital communications in the country.

With this rule in place, removing or deactivating your SIM will now trigger an instant logout from all associated messaging apps, preventing unauthorized access or misuse. Users who regularly rely on platforms like WhatsApp Web or Telegram Desktop will also experience changes, as these linked sessions will now automatically log out every six hours, requiring fresh verification through the registered phone number. This new verification flow aims to reduce unauthorized device syncing and strengthen account integrity.

The DoT has provided all platforms a compliance window of 90 days, urging app developers to update their authentication systems in accordance with the new requirements. While the change may initially feel restrictive, the broader objective is to enhance user safety, reduce SIM fraud, stop cloned logins, and reinforce digital identity protection across the country.
