Memory Shortage Explained: Why Tech Devices Are Getting Expensive

Smartphones and laptops are likely to become much more expensive in the coming months, and the reason has very little to do with brands or marketing strategies. A growing shortage of RAM and storage components is quietly building in the background, and artificial intelligence is the main force driving it.

AI companies across the globe are placing massive long-term orders for memory and storage, worth billions of dollars. These companies need huge amounts of hardware to power data centers and advanced models, and manufacturers are prioritizing these high-value contracts over consumer electronics.

As production capacity gets locked in by enterprise and AI clients, less supply is left for smartphones, laptops, and PCs. RAM and storage makers naturally follow the money, and this shift is already starting to impact pricing across the consumer market.

Several laptop brands are expected to announce price increases soon, with estimates pointing toward a 20 to 25 percent jump. Smartphones are also expected to get hit, since memory and storage are among the most expensive parts inside modern devices.

Industry watchers believe this is only the beginning. By early 2026, prices could climb another 15 percent or more if supply pressure continues. If things worsen, the price gap could become shocking, pushing today’s mid-range devices into premium territory.

This could mean paying close to twice as much for products that are currently considered affordable. A phone priced at ₹30,000 today could cost ₹60,000 in the near future, while a ₹60,000 laptop could easily cross ₹1,20,000.

For buyers, the message is simple. If you are planning to buy a new phone, laptop, or PC, doing it sooner may save you a significant amount of money. Even upgrading RAM or storage now could help avoid higher costs later.

As AI continues to reshape the tech industry, consumer electronics are feeling the pressure. The coming months may be a turning point for pricing, making this a moment worth paying attention to.
