Privacy-focused smartphones are slowly carving out a niche in the mobile market, and Swiss brand Punkt has now entered the segment with the launch of its new MC03 privacy phone. According to reports, the device is priced at €699, which roughly translates to ₹57,000 in India, and the price includes one year of bundled subscription services.

What makes the MC03 stand out is its strict subscription-based approach. After the first year, users must pay a minimum monthly fee of €10, or around ₹82, to continue using the phone without restrictions. The company clearly states that without an active subscription, several core phone functions will be disabled, significantly limiting usability. Punkt’s philosophy is straightforward: if users are not paying for the product, then they themselves become the product.
The MC03 runs on a custom operating system called AOS, which is claimed to be developed in Switzerland and is based on AOSP. The software is designed with a minimal interface and focuses heavily on privacy, removing Google services at the core level. Users are also allowed to set independent privacy permissions for each application, offering deeper control over data access compared to conventional Android devices.

In terms of hardware, the phone features a bulky design with dimensions of 163 × 76 × 11 mm and weighs 240 grams. On the front, it houses a 6.67-inch OLED display with a resolution of 1080 × 2346 pixels and a 120Hz refresh rate. The panel is rated at 550 nits of brightness and includes a 32MP front-facing camera.
The rear camera setup includes a 64MP primary sensor, paired with an 8MP ultra-wide lens and a 2MP macro camera. Powering the device is the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 processor, coupled with 8GB of RAM. The phone packs a 5,200mAh battery, which should be adequate given the minimal software layer and privacy-focused usage model.
While the MC03 offers strong privacy controls and a de-Googled experience, its high upfront cost combined with a mandatory subscription model makes it a tough sell for mainstream consumers. Devices like this are clearly targeted at users who prioritize data protection above convenience, app ecosystem size, or value for money.
