Apple has finally entered the foldable smartphone market with the iPhone Duo, but Indian buyers are being asked to pay a very high price for Apple’s first attempt. The iPhone Duo starts at ₹2,99,900 in India, making it one of the most expensive mainstream smartphones available in the country.

The pricing becomes even more interesting when compared with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8. Samsung’s foldable starts at ₹1,79,999 in India, meaning Apple’s iPhone Duo costs roughly ₹1.2 lakh more at the starting level.

Apple is clearly positioning the iPhone Duo as an ultra-premium product rather than a foldable designed for mass adoption.

iPhone Duo vs Previous iPhone Generations

The iPhone Duo represents the biggest design change in Apple’s smartphone lineup in years. Traditional iPhones have always used a single rigid display, while the Duo opens like a passport to provide a much larger screen.

The phone has a 5.4-inch outer display for normal smartphone use and a 7.6-inch inner display when unfolded. This gives users more space for multitasking, video, gaming and productivity.

Apple has also redesigned iOS for the foldable form factor. Users can run two apps side by side, open two instances of the same application and pair apps together for quick multitasking.

The high Indian price is another major change. Apple’s conventional Pro Max models already sit in the premium segment, but the iPhone Duo moves into an entirely different price category. This gives Samsung and other foldable manufacturers a significant advantage for buyers who care about value.

iPhone Duo Full Specifications

The iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner foldable display. The larger screen is designed to provide a tablet-like experience while the folded phone remains compact enough for normal smartphone use. Apple has also focused on making the inner display durable and reducing the visible crease.

The device is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chipset, which is also used in the iPhone 18 Pro series. The processor is built using a 2-nanometer manufacturing process and is designed to provide strong performance for gaming, multitasking and on-device artificial intelligence.

The iPhone Duo includes a dual-camera rear system led by a 48MP Fusion Main camera. It also has a 24MP telephoto camera. The foldable design enables special camera functions, including outer-screen previews and the ability to record using the front and rear cameras simultaneously.

Apple has equipped the phone with two battery cells that work together as a single power system. The company claims up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display and up to 44 hours using the outer display. Mixed use is rated at up to 24 hours.

The phone supports fast charging and can reach 50 percent charge in around 24 minutes. It also supports Apple Pencil through USB, bringing a feature previously associated mainly with iPads to the iPhone.

For security, Apple uses Touch ID built into the side button rather than Face ID. The phone also features a titanium-based construction and Apple’s latest Ceramic Shield protection.

The iPhone Duo starts at ₹2,99,900 in India. The US starting price is $1,999. Apple has positioned the device as an ultra-premium foldable, with higher storage configurations costing significantly more.

Our Take

The iPhone Duo gives Apple a powerful entry into the foldable market, but its Indian pricing will be one of the biggest talking points. At ₹2,99,900, Apple’s first foldable costs around ₹1.2 lakh more than the Galaxy Z Fold 8 at its starting price.

For Apple fans who want the company’s ecosystem in a foldable design, the premium may be acceptable. But for buyers comparing hardware and value, Samsung and other established foldable brands could remain much more attractive.

Apple’s entry could still have a major impact on the category. The real question is whether buyers are willing to pay Apple’s premium for the first-generation iPhone Duo.
