India has made another bold step toward semiconductor self-reliance, as Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently confirmed that the country is developing its first indigenous 7nm processor. Sharing a preview video on his X account, the minister highlighted that the upcoming chip has been designed for high performance and improved power efficiency, aligning with India’s long-term vision to build a strong semiconductor ecosystem. This breakthrough is part of the India Semiconductor Mission and marks India’s entry into advanced chip research alongside global leaders.
According to the announcement, the 7nm processor is being developed at IIT Madras with the support of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). The processor is intended for high-performance server environments across industries such as defense, telecom, finance, and strategic applications. With growing reliance on artificial intelligence, 5G networks, data centers, and supercomputing, this indigenous processor is expected to play a key role in India’s digital and economic growth.
The minister further emphasized that India is progressing from 28nm to the advanced 7nm technology node, and this roadmap is expected to pave the way for future semiconductor fabrication within the country. “We will be taking the path from 28nm to 7nm so that in the future, this can be loaded in our Fab. Let’s do it,” Vaishnaw stated. The processor is projected to be completed by 2028, positioning India to reduce its dependency on foreign chip manufacturers and accelerate innovation in critical technology sectors.
This milestone follows India’s expanding focus on chip manufacturing incentives and partnerships with global semiconductor companies.
