Coolpad has confirmed the prices of its COOL X Wide smartphone in China. The phone stands out because it uses a wider screen shape than most modern Android phones. Instead of a tall, narrow display, it has a 16:10 layout that gives more horizontal space for reading, browsing and using two apps together.
The device is aimed at people who want a different screen shape at an entry-level price. However, its display resolution and 4G-only processor are important limits that buyers should understand before considering it.

Price and storage options
- 8GB RAM + 128GB storage: ¥999
- 8GB RAM + 256GB storage: ¥1,199

A wider display with a trade-off
The COOL X Wide uses a 6.38-inch LCD panel with a 720 × 1158 resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. Its 16:10 ratio is closer to the shape of a small tablet than the tall displays found on most smartphones.
This shape could be useful for reading articles, viewing documents, browsing websites and watching some types of video. A wider screen may also make split-screen use more comfortable because each app has more horizontal room.
But the resolution is low for a display of this size. Text and fine details will not look as sharp as they do on a Full HD+ phone. Buyers who often read small text, edit photos or watch high-resolution video should keep this limitation in mind.
The phone is available in three colours: white, black and red. Its body measures about 150.3 × 94.5 × 8.95mm, so it is much wider than a typical phone. That may help with reading, but it could make one-handed use and pocket comfort more difficult.
Processor, camera and battery
The phone is powered by the MediaTek Helio G99 processor, paired with LPDDR4X memory and UFS 2.2 storage. The chipset supports 4G rather than 5G, so buyers should not expect next-generation mobile-network connectivity from this model.
The rear camera has a 50MP main sensor. A high megapixel count does not guarantee excellent image quality, so real-world photo samples will be more useful than the number alone.
Its 4,600mAh battery should provide a reasonable capacity for basic daily tasks, although actual endurance will depend on screen brightness, network use and the apps running in the background. The phone also supports microSD storage expansion of up to 256GB, giving users extra space for photos, videos and offline files.
Who is it for?
The COOL X Wide may appeal to people who prefer a wider screen for reading and multitasking, or who want a secondary device for videos and everyday browsing. It could also suit users who value a simple interface and expandable storage over gaming performance.
However, it is not a direct alternative to a modern 5G phone with a sharp Full HD+ display. The low resolution and 4G-only processor are significant compromises, even at the starting price.

Passionategeekz Take
The COOL X Wide brings a different screen shape to the budget phone market. Its wider layout may be useful for reading and multitasking, but the low display resolution and lack of 5G limit its appeal. Buyers should consider it for its shape and basic features, not as a performance-focused phone.
