It’s official. Google is finally saying goodbye to Google Assistant, and millions of Android users are about to see a major change.

Starting September 4, 2026, Google will begin removing Google Assistant from Android phones and other supported devices. Users will be moved to Gemini, and once the change reaches their device, there will be no option to switch back to the classic Assistant.

Google Assistant Is Going Away

Gemini may be smarter, but it doesn’t perfectly replace every Google Assistant feature yet.

Gemini can handle tasks such as calls, messages, navigation, routines and several device controls. However, some Assistant features may be unavailable or may work differently after the switch.

For users who mainly used Assistant for quick commands, smart-home controls and simple voice actions, this could be the biggest part of the transition.
