The new BMW 3 Series is in its final testing phase, with fresh images and renderings offering an early glimpse at the brand’s next-generation sedan. The current G20 model has been on the road for seven years, and while the generational shift has taken longer than usual, BMW is preparing to debut a bold redesign that redefines the iconic “3.”

Design Direction: The upcoming BMW 3 Series (codenamed G50) draws inspiration from the BMW Vision Neue Klasse concept car but won’t fully replicate its futuristic styling. The sedan will feature sleeker proportions compared to the bulkier G20 body. The front fascia adopts lighting cues from the new BMW iX3, including diagonal daytime running light elements. Interestingly, BMW has opted against vertical kidney grilles, sticking to a more traditional low-slung sedan profile.

Other design highlights include a rising window line toward the C-pillar, wide taillights, and retractable door handles. While the latter are often seen as less practical, BMW appears committed to maintaining this sleek design element. Spy shots also show the electric BMW i3 sedan testing alongside the iX3 crossover, suggesting parallel launches for both EV and combustion-engine versions.

Engines and Platform: The combustion-engine 3 Series will continue on the CLAR modular platform and retain BMW’s hallmark inline-six engines. Confirmed options include 3.0-liter units for performance-focused variants like the next BMW M3. All internal combustion models will feature mild-hybrid technology with a 48V electrical system, ensuring improved efficiency while preserving BMW’s driving dynamics.

Launch Timeline: Although the official premiere was initially expected in 2025, delays mean the G50 BMW 3 Series will likely debut in 2026. Alongside it, BMW plans to unveil the production version of the all-electric i3 sedan, marking a dual strategy that caters to both EV enthusiasts and traditional performance purists. The new BMW 4 Series is also set to follow shortly after the 3 Series launch.

With its blend of evolutionary design, electrification, and classic powertrains, the BMW 3 Series aims to balance heritage with innovation as it enters its next chapter.
