TECNO has been steadily improving its POVA lineup, and the POVA 8 5G is easily one of its most interesting smartphones yet. Instead of chasing benchmark numbers alone, the company has focused on delivering a phone that excels in day-to-day usage with an eye-catching design, excellent battery life, practical software features, and impressive network reception.
After using the TECNO POVA 8 5G extensively, here’s our complete review.
Design & Build Quality
The TECNO POVA 8 5G immediately grabs attention with its distinctive design. The 16-Bit White colour option is easily one of the best-looking finishes in its segment, giving the phone a premium and futuristic appearance.
The unique camera module helps the device stand apart from the competition, while the matte-finished frame feels comfortable and resists fingerprints. TECNO has also added an orange power button, which adds just enough contrast without making the phone look overly flashy.
For users who appreciate unique smartphone designs, the POVA 8 5G is among the most stylish devices in its price category.
Display
Although the TECNO POVA 8 5G uses an LCD panel instead of OLED, the display quality is surprisingly good.
Colours appear natural, outdoor visibility is strong, and the screen remains comfortable during extended usage. Unlike many OLED displays, the LCD panel also avoids PWM flickering, making it a better option for users who are sensitive to OLED displays.
One of the standout additions is the Alive Matrix Display. This secondary notification interface can sync with Gmail and WhatsApp notifications, allowing users to check alerts without waking the main display. It can also display custom animations and even function as a timer, making it more useful than expected.
The only drawback is that an OLED panel would have offered deeper blacks and a more premium multimedia experience.
Performance & Software Experience
Powering the phone is the MediaTek Dimensity 7100 processor. For everyday tasks like social media, messaging, multitasking, video streaming, and casual gaming, the performance remains smooth and responsive. HiOS 16 feels well optimized, and app switching rarely causes noticeable slowdowns.
However, this chipset feels slightly underwhelming considering the phone’s pricing. Competitors using the Dimensity 7300 deliver better gaming performance, stronger graphics processing, and a more capable image signal processor.
Another compromise is the use of UFS 2.2 storage, which feels dated compared to newer storage standards.
TECNO’s HiOS 16 has improved significantly over previous generations. The interface feels smooth, feature-rich, and includes several genuinely useful additions rather than unnecessary bloat.
Some of the highlights include:
- WhatsApp integration inside the native dialer
- WhatsApp call recording
- Productivity-focused multitasking features
- Extensive customization options
- Useful AI-powered features
App opening animations could still be more polished, but overall, the software experience is enjoyable and reliable.
Battery Life
Battery life is where the TECNO POVA 8 5G truly shines.
Its massive 8000mAh battery easily delivers over 10 hours of screen-on time with regular 5G usage. Even after adding navigation, gaming, and heavy multitasking, the phone comfortably manages around 8.5 hours of screen-on time, making it one of the best battery performers in its category.
Charging is handled by a bundled 45W fast charger, which takes roughly 1 hour and 20 minutes to fully recharge the device. While not slow, faster charging would have complemented the large battery better.
Cameras
The TECNO POVA 8 5G surprised us with its camera performance.
The Sony LYT-600 main camera captures detailed and balanced images during daylight while maintaining good highlight control. The default image processing slightly brightens photos, but adjusting the exposure produces more natural-looking results.
The 2x digital zoom retains respectable detail, and indoor photography remains good under decent lighting conditions.
However, there are a few limitations:
- No Optical Image Stabilization (OIS)
- No ultra-wide camera
- Portrait edge detection needs improvement
- Video recording is limited to 2K at 30fps
- Pro Mode lacks HDR support
Despite these compromises, the primary camera delivers results that are better than expected for everyday photography.
Audio & Haptics
The phone features a mono speaker with Dolby Atmos support.
While audio quality is decent, it simply cannot compete with stereo speaker setups offered by many rivals. The vibration motor also feels basic and lacks the refined feedback seen on premium smartphones.
Pros
- Premium and unique design
- Excellent battery life
- Useful Alive Matrix Display
- Smooth HiOS 16 experience
- Reliable Sony LYT-600 camera
- Outstanding network reception
- Bright and colour-accurate LCD panel
Cons
- Dimensity 7100 feels average for the price
- UFS 2.2 storage
- No OLED display
- No OIS
- No ultra-wide camera
- 2K video recording only
- Mono speaker
- Basic haptics
Final Verdict
The TECNO POVA 8 5G focuses on what matters most in daily usage. Its standout design, exceptional battery life, practical software features, reliable cameras, and excellent connectivity make it an enjoyable smartphone for users who prioritize endurance and everyday performance.
That said, its processor, LCD display, mono speaker, and camera limitations make it difficult to recommend unreservedly at its expected price point, especially when competitors offer more powerful hardware.
If your priorities are battery life, unique styling, dependable connectivity, and software features, the TECNO POVA 8 5G is an excellent choice. However, gamers and multimedia enthusiasts may find better value elsewhere.
