Passionategeekz On June 18, technology media 80Lv released a blog post yesterday (June 17), reporting that Nexus Mods, the world’s largest gaming MOD platform, announced the handover of ownership. Its latest owners are Danish entrepreneurs Victor Folmann and Marinus Elgaard.
The platform founder Robin Scott (community nickname Dark0ne) will quit day-to-day management and hand over the ownership of the website to the new owner after 24 years of its establishment.
In the official statement, Scott did not mention the identity of the new owner, but only mentioned that Foledinho (Victor) and Rapsak (Marinus) play more important roles in the future operation of the website.
Passionategeekz cited information deeply explored by the media and found traces of Foledinho (Victor Folmann) and Rapsak (Marinus Elgaard) on the LinkedIn platform. It found that both were Danish, and Marinus clearly listed his Nexus Mods work experience in the Experience column.
Further tracking shows that Victor is associated with Marinus’ company Chosen and Nexus Mods’ new COO Nikolai Nguyen. The three jointly operate multiple companies, including game trading website FUTBIN and e-sports media HLTV.
Chosen’s official website describes the business in just a large number of corporate terms, claiming to “assist the founders in expanding their business and ensuring long-term development.” Its “cooperation cases” include RenderZ owned by Victor, GamerzClass participated by Marinus, etc. These companies have direct equity relationships with the three rather than independent customers.
What’s more striking is that Chosen is closely related to Danish sports media group Better Collective: Nikolai once worked as FUTBIN (owned by Better Collective), while Victor is deeply tied to Better Collective executive Jesper Søgaard through investment institution Dreamcraft Ventures.
Analysts believe that the funds from Chosen’s acquisition of Nexus Mods may come from the proceeds sold by GamerzClass to Metafy, or the infusion of Better Collective and Dreamcraft.
In terms of motivation, Nexus Mods, as a successful case of the user-generated content (UGC) profit model, is in line with capital’s acquisition trend of high-traffic platforms. However, Chosen’s low-key style has raised questions: Why is his identity not revealed? Its official website has only 5 Twitter followers, the Discord server is empty, and there is no detailed business description.
Players are concerned that new teams may introduce commercialization strategies, such as limiting module distribution or adding paid content. It is worth noting that the Nexus Mods community administrator deleted comments that promoted other module platforms in advance and closed the comment section of the announcement page.
Although Dark0ne calls it “userless”, the relationship between Choosen and the Danish capital circle and its vague business logic have aggravated players’ uneasiness about the future direction of the platform.
