Passionategeekz On June 17, Tesla confirmed that the upgrade of the front-view camera it introduced on some of the latest vehicles is an initiative aimed at improving the vehicle’s autonomous driving capabilities.
Passionategeekz noticed that Tesla first introduced a front-view camera on Cybertruck, which is mounted on the front bumper of the vehicle to enhance the vehicle’s visual perception. Subsequently, the new Model Y also added this camera configuration. Last week, the new Model S and Model X also added front-view cameras, which Tesla made it clear that they will assist in multiple aspects, including “using Autopilot and Actually Smart Summon features” to improve the vehicle’s field of view when parking or using autonomous driving capabilities.
It is worth noting that Tesla’s description of this configuration on the new Model S and Model X is different from the statement when the new Model Y was launched in January this year. At the time, Tesla said the front bumper camera “provided a broader field of view for automatic assisted driving and advanced smart summoning features.”
When Tesla launched Tesla Vision many years ago, it had changed from relying on a combination of cameras and sensors to using cameras only for the development of autonomous driving technology. Tesla believes that ultrasonic sensors are not necessary for autonomous driving, and through cameras and visual perception networks, more efficient and accurate object recognition and spatial positioning can be achieved.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk once said that sensors are just auxiliary tools, and autonomous driving through cameras will be safer than human driving. “When the vision system works, it works better than the best level of humans. It’s like having eight eyes that can be seen in all directions around the vehicle and even with visual coverage behind the vehicle. This vision system is able to process information at a speed that is super human, and there is no doubt that with pure vision solutions we can create a safer car than the average person.”
