Passionategeekz June 22, Snap Inc. (the parent company of overseas Snapchat social applications and Spectacles AR glasses) recently announced a strategic partnership with virtual reality company Niantic Spatial (representative work “Pokémon GO”) to introduce Niantic’s Niantic VPS visual positioning system to the Snapchat and Spectacles platforms.

Currently, a single AR/XR device can easily achieve self-positioning/anchoring points for a virtual item in a local environment, but if it is multiple AR/XR devices, it is difficult to get a consistent viewing experience for the corresponding device, that is, there are subtle differences in the location of the virtual item seen by everyone.

The Niantic VPS visual positioning system created by Niantic is said to break through the corresponding barriers, allowing all AR/XR devices to access a unified “space map” to achieve high-precision virtual item positioning, allowing users wearing the corresponding headset to see the same augmented reality content at the same time and in the same venue.

According to the official announcement, this cooperation will not only bring Snap to the urban scale to spatial positioning capabilities, but also hope to provide Niantic with huge user-generated data to accelerate the construction and optimization of its spatial map.Currently, developers can use the corresponding VPS system to anchor AR effects on millions of real locations around the world, claiming to be “accuracy to centimeters.”

The official releases a series of display images aimed at introducing the corresponding system features. For example, developers can create a live virtual concert in a city square and anchor a “portal” in front of a specific bench. Although Spectacles AR glasses are still in its early stages, the official said that with the help of Snapchat’s huge social user base, this cooperation is expected to help both parties quickly establish the “world’s most complete AR geospatial data network” and create the “next generation of immersive social experience.”
