Indian AI company Sarvam has signed a five-year agreement with Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff. The partnership will help develop AI applications for the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force. The agreement is part of India’s wider push to build secure technology using local AI models, infrastructure and engineering teams.

What Will the Partnership Cover?
The agreement creates a framework for several AI projects across the three services. These projects will focus on operational needs, training, knowledge management and decision support.
AI systems could help teams search large collections of information, organise records and understand data from different sources. They may also support training and planning tasks.
The exact applications will depend on the projects selected by HQ IDS and the requirements of each service.
Focus on Indian AI and Secure Infrastructure
Sarvam says the work will use its AI technology, including foundation models such as Sarvam 105B. The projects will be handled through Chanakya, its division focused on national security and defence.
The company says the systems will be developed and deployed on sovereign infrastructure. This means the work is intended to remain under Indian control rather than depending entirely on outside services.
The agreement also aims to help the three services share useful technology and knowledge across joint projects.
Human Oversight Remains Important
Sarvam has stated that human oversight will remain in place for operational decisions.
This is important because AI systems can make mistakes, misunderstand information or produce results that need further checks. In sensitive areas, trained people must remain responsible for reviewing important decisions.
Important Clarification About the Agreement
Sarvam has clarified that the MoU was signed with Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, an organisation under the Ministry of Defence. Some reports described it as a direct agreement with the Ministry, but the company has corrected that description.
Why This Matters for India’s AI Industry
The partnership shows that Indian AI companies are moving beyond consumer chatbots and general-purpose assistants. They are also working on secure systems for government, business and national infrastructure.
Such projects could help build local expertise in language models, data systems, AI agents and secure computing.

Passionategeekz Take
Sarvam’s partnership with HQ IDS is an important development for India’s homegrown AI ecosystem. It shows that local AI companies are being considered for complex and sensitive projects.
The real value will depend on how well these systems perform, how securely they handle information and how effectively they support people working across the three services.
