[CNMO Technology News]According to Korean media reports, Samsung has made new progress in the research and development of all-solid-state batteries (ASSB) technology, which may bring major changes to the power systems of smartphones and electric vehicles in the future. At present, Samsung SDI has started verification of dry electrode manufacturing process at the “DryEV” test factory in Cheonan, South Korea, which marks that the technology has moved from the laboratory stage to a feasibility assessment of mass production.

Unlike traditional wet electrode manufacturing, Samsung’s dry electrode process does not require the use of solvents, but uses PTFE adhesive to form a fiber structure under pressure to tightly bond the conductive material to create a dense and durable electrode film. This method not only reduces energy consumption and production costs, but also improves the flexibility of electrode thickness, which can adjust the thickness according to the application scenario, and is suitable for different types of battery products.

Samsung plans to apply the technology to its all-solid-state battery. It is reported that the energy density of the new generation of batteries is expected to reach about 900Wh/L, which is about 40% higher than the current commercial prism batteries, and it also has higher safety and longer service life. If the R&D is smooth, this type of battery is expected to be used in the next generation of Galaxy series mobile phones and electric transportation around 2027.

At present, Samsung has not introduced silicon-carbon negative electrode batteries in its smartphones, which also makes models that pursue thin and light designs slightly inferior to some Chinese brand flagship products in terms of battery life. Industry analysts believe that if Samsung can take the lead in achieving commercialization of all-solid-state batteries, it will have a clear advantage in the competition for battery technology.
