Passionategeekz June 24th news, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced today that it will build a new nuclear power plant in New York State, USA to benefit the US authorities pursuing “energy dominance”, the technology giants with growing demand for electricity in AI data centers, and environmentalists who support nuclear energy as an alternative to zero carbon emissions, which also marks the “revival” of nuclear energy in the United States.
According to Hochur’s order, the New York Power Authority will be responsible for building at least one nuclear power plant in the upper part of the state. The power generation capacity is no less than 1GW (approximately half of the production capacity of the Hoover Hydropower Station)。
The state government plans to adopt the “small modular reactor (SMR)” technology that is still under development. This technology can significantly reduce construction and operation costs. For comparison, the Vogtle nuclear power plant in Georgia is the first new nuclear power plant project in the United States in nearly 30 years, but its Units 3 and 4 were not put into production until 2023 and 2024 after the start of construction in 2009, with a total cost exceeding the budget of about US$17 billion (Passionategeekz Note: the current exchange rate is approximately RMB 122.109 billion).
At present, the average service life of nuclear power plant reactors in the United States is 42 years, and many units are currently retired or about to be retired. But this trend is gradually reversing, revitalizing with the promotion of authorities’ incentive policies and technology companies.
For example, Google and Amazon signed a cooperation agreement to support the development of a new generation of reactors; Meta signed an agreement this month to help a nuclear reactor built in the 1980s extend its life by 20 years; and Microsoft also announced last year that it signed a power purchase agreement with relevant parties to promote the restart of a nuclear reactor on San Mile Island.
