Passionategeekz On June 22, SpaceX founder Elon Musk explained the Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly (RUD) incident during the test of Starship Ship 36. According to Musk, preliminary data show that a nitrogen composite winding pressure vessel (COPV) in the Starship 36 payload compartment failed under its verification pressure.
Wednesday night,Starship 36 had an RUD event while conducting a static ignition test. Videos circulating online show Starship 36 exploded into a huge fireball on its launch pad at Starbase, Texas. Images of the scene after the explosion showed that the piping system in the area suffered severe damage and the structure of the launch pad had been destroyed.
Musk shared some information shortly after the incident. Replying to a post by space enthusiast @Erdayastronaut, Musk said: “Preliminary data suggest that the nitrogen COPV in the load tank has malfunctioned below its validation pressure.” He also noted: “If further investigations confirm this, this will be the first time such a situation has occurred in this design.”
Passionategeekz noted that SpaceX posted a detailed description of the incident on its official website, saying: “After completing the single-engine static ignition test earlier this week, the aircraft was in the process of loading cryogenic propellant for the six-engine static ignition test, suddenly a violent energy event occurred, resulting in complete damage to the starship and damage to the area around the launch pad.”
“The explosion caused multiple fires at the test site, and the area is currently unattended and will be evaluated after safety is confirmed. Personnel should not be approached until safety operations are completed,” SpaceX wrote in a statement.
Despite the RUD incident on Starship 36, SpaceX stressed that the incident would not cause any harm to the communities around the Rio Grande Valley. In addition, SpaceX also confirmed on X social media platform that all personnel on the Starship team were safe and sound after the explosion of Starship 36.
