Microsoft Makes Bold Move: New Accounts Now Default to Passwordless Login

From passwords to Passkeys, Microsoft is redefining how we access our digital lives.

In a landmark shift aimed at enhancing both security and convenience, Microsoft announced that starting May 2, all newly registered Microsoft accounts will default to passwordless login. This marks a major milestone in the tech giant’s mission to eliminate traditional passwords—a move long awaited by cybersecurity advocates and tech users alike.

Instead of the usual alphanumeric passwords, new users will be encouraged to log in using Passkeys, push notifications, or hardware security keys. These modern authentication methods are not only more secure, but also far more user-friendly. Microsoft has even redesigned its login interface to highlight these password-free options, making it easier than ever to adopt a safer digital identity.

“New users won’t need to create a password at all,” Microsoft confirmed, while also noting that existing users can choose to remove their passwords through account settings if they prefer a passwordless experience.

The company shared compelling statistics to back the move: users relying on Passkeys enjoy a 98% login success rate, compared to a mere 32% for traditional password users. With nearly 1 million new Passkey registrations every day, user adoption is clearly on the rise.

To symbolize the shift in mindset, Microsoft has also rebranded World Password Day—celebrated annually in early May—as World Passkey Day, reaffirming its commitment to a passwordless future.

While the option to use passwords remains for those who prefer it, Microsoft’s direction is clear: the future of digital security is passwordless, and it starts now.
