Passionategeekz On June 21, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said on Wednesday that Meta had offered an OpenAI employee $100 million (current exchange rate is approximately RMB 718 million) bonus to poach people, but failed.
In response, Meta Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Andrew Bosworth said in a podcast on Friday local time that OpenAI is not an ordinary person, and the company has taken countermeasures against Meta’s high-paying invitation to its employees, implying that OpenAI has also provided competitive treatment to retain employees.
“The market has set a very high salary level for this type of talent, which is unprecedented in my 2020-year career as a tech executive,” he said on Friday when he was a guest at Closing Bell Overtime.
He also explained the Meta technology vision: “We firmly believe that the future super intelligent AI will assist humans at every step – AI is always present when people need it. Fortunately, we have gathered internal and external teams (such as Alexander King) to advance this goal with all our efforts.”
In terms of financial dimension, Meta’s capital expenditure and financial leasing principal payment amount in the first quarter of this year was close to US$14 billion (the current exchange rate is approximately RMB 100.549 billion). Bosworth added: “Now, we are matching investments in talent. The combination of computing power and talent is the key to realizing our vision.”
Since the beginning of this year, the competition for talent in the AI field has heated up sharply, especially Meta has made frequent moves:
-
Alexandr Wang, co-founder of Scale AI, announced a few days ago that he would join Meta to focus on “super intelligence” research and development. Meta will inject over US$14 billion into Scale AI (Passionategeekz Note: the current exchange rate is approximately RMB 100.549 billion) in exchange for 49% of the equity.
-
Meta has sought to acquire Safe Superintelligence, a startup founder of OpenAI, despite the unsuccessful acquisition, and is now recruiting CEO Daniel Gross and former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman.
-
Meta once approached startup Perplexity AI to discuss the possibility of acquisition, but the deal was not implemented in the end.
