Director Mamoru Hosoda’s new movie, titled “Scarlet” (Japanese title: “Hateshinaki Scarlet”), has just unveiled its first visual and trailer, along with the premiere dates for Japan and the United States. Produced by Studio Chizu, the film centers around Scarlet, described as a “strong princess who transcends time and space.” Japanese audiences can look forward to its release on November 11, while fans in the United States will have to wait until December 12, 2025, to see it.
Hosoda, renowned for his works such as “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time,” “Summer Wars,” and “Belle,” takes on the roles of director, screenwriter, and original creator for this project. He has revealed that “Scarlet” draws inspiration from a “world-famous work on par with Beauty and the Beast.” The narrative will feature a second main character, incorporating elements of both a “road movie” and a “buddy story.” It explores the journey of two contrasting individuals who gradually deepen their bond over time.
While the trailer predominantly showcases Scarlet, the second character makes a brief appearance towards the end, hinting at an interesting dynamic between them. Additionally, Hosoda has teased that the film will present a unique style, moving away from traditional 2D animation and Hollywood-style CG, as Studio Chizu aims to create a completely fresh visual experience. You can catch a glimpse of this with the first visual and trailer now available.
