Apple is expected to enter the foldable smartphone market with
its first foldable iPhone this September. The phone is currently
being referred to as the iPhone Ultra, although Apple has not
officially confirmed the name.

Samsung is already several generations into the foldable market.
Its Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra offers a large foldable screen, flagship
performance, multiple cameras and a premium design.

This makes the two phones very interesting rivals. Apple is
bringing its software and chip advantage into a category where
Samsung already has years of experience.

Display

Current leaks suggest the iPhone Ultra could have a roughly
7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch outer display. The inner
screen is expected to use a wide 4:3-style layout.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra also focuses on a large tablet-like
inner display. Samsung has already confirmed its latest foldable
lineup and offers a large screen designed for multitasking,
reading, gaming and video.

Apple could have an advantage if its reported thinner design and
crease reduction claims turn out to be accurate. Samsung, however,
has the advantage of having a tested product already on the market.

Performance

The iPhone Ultra is expected to use Apple’s A20 chip based on
TSMC’s 2nm process. This could make the phone extremely powerful
while also improving power efficiency.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra uses Qualcomm’s latest flagship platform
for Samsung’s foldable lineup and offers up to 16GB RAM depending
on the storage version.

Apple could win raw chip performance, but Samsung offers more RAM
and Android’s flexible multitasking experience.

Camera

The iPhone Ultra is currently expected to use a dual rear camera
system. Exact sensor details have not been officially confirmed.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra offers a more established multi-camera
system, including 50MP-class rear cameras, along with Samsung’s
image processing and zoom features.

Samsung therefore has the safer camera choice today, while Apple
could compete through image processing and video quality.

Battery

A recent leak suggests the iPhone Ultra could use a dual-cell
battery with a combined rated capacity of around 4,883mAh.
This information remains unconfirmed.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is expected to offer a 5,000mAh-class
battery, giving Samsung a slight advantage on battery capacity.

However, battery capacity alone does not tell the full story.
Apple’s chip and software optimisation could help the iPhone
Ultra deliver strong real-world battery life.

Design

Design could be the biggest battle between these two foldables.
Current iPhone Ultra leaks suggest Apple is targeting an extremely
thin body, with reports pointing to around 4.5mm thickness when
unfolded.

The phone is also expected to use Touch ID instead of Face ID,
mainly because the extremely thin design may not leave enough room
for Apple’s traditional TrueDepth system.

Samsung has already focused heavily on reducing the weight and
thickness of its latest foldable generation.
