Apple is reportedly preparing a new multitasking interface for iPhone, similar to the Stage Manager feature found on iPad. According to foreign media sources, this interface could debut with iOS 19 and would activate when an iPhone is connected to an external display via the USB-C port. While this may seem like a niche feature now, industry watchers believe it’s a strategic move, setting the stage for the highly anticipated foldable iPhone expected next year.
Tentatively dubbed the iPhone Fold, Apple’s first foldable device is rumored to feature a 7.8-inch inner display—closely resembling the aspect ratio and screen size of the iPad mini. This dual-mode design would allow users to operate the phone like a standard iPhone when folded and enjoy a tablet-like experience when unfolded. Naturally, such a shift in form factor demands a robust and adaptive operating system, capable of fluid multitasking.
That’s where iOS 19 comes in. The rumored Stage Manager-style interface for iPhone is unlikely to be limited to external monitor usage alone. Considering Apple’s typical approach to software development, it’s improbable that they would invest in such a complex feature for such a limited use case. A more logical explanation is that Apple is using this as a testbed to refine multitasking for the upcoming foldable iPhone.
By introducing the new interface in iOS 19 a year ahead of the foldable iPhone’s launch, Apple can collect valuable real-world usage data and feedback. This would give the company ample time to fine-tune the feature, ensuring it delivers a seamless experience when the iPhone Fold finally debuts.
