India’s Smartphone Shipments Fall 26% in Q3 2026
India’s smartphone market has recorded a sharp fall in shipments. Market research firm Omdia estimates that 35.8 million smartphones were shipped in the third quarter of 2026, down 26% from the same period last year.
This was the lowest third-quarter shipment total since 2016. Higher phone prices, careful spending and weaker online shipments all contributed to the slowdown.
Samsung returns to the top
Samsung regained first place after several quarters outside the top position. The company shipped an estimated 6.7 million phones, followed by vivo at 6.4 million. BrandShipments Samsung6.7 million vivo6.4 million OPPO4.9 million Xiaomi4.7 million Apple3.9 million
These figures measure shipments into the market, not the exact number of phones purchased by consumers.
Why are shipments falling?
Higher component costs are making it harder for brands to keep phone prices low. Some buyers are also holding on to their current phones for longer instead of upgrading.
The later timing of Diwali moved some festive stock preparation into October, adding to the third-quarter decline.
Brands may now need to focus on better software, useful AI features, trade-in offers and affordable financing to encourage upgrades.

Passionategeekz Take
The shipment decline shows that higher prices can make people think twice before buying a new phone. Brands that offer clear improvements, useful software and better value may have a stronger chance of winning customers in the months ahead.
