Passionategeekz On June 18, the racing-themed blockbuster “F1: Racing” collaborated with Apple and Warner Bros. will be released in mainland China and around the world on June 27, starring Brad Pitt. After the theaters are offline, it will also be launched on the Apple TV+ streaming platform.

According to Wired, director Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun 2) and photographer Claudio Miranda (The Strange Things of Benjamin Button) encountered a problem while filming the film. After learning about it, Apple specially customized a special camera module for it.

Directors and photographers hope to take real driver perspective lenses, but for aerodynamics and safety considerations, the crew was unable to install traditional movie cameras commonly used in Hollywood directly onto F1 racing cars, and the image quality of the conventional F1 broadcast cameras did not meet the theater standards.

Apple regards this as an opportunity worthy of innovation, so it has led engineers to develop a customized camera system to replace the standard broadcast module, and while ensuring that it can withstand the extreme F1 event-level environment, it can control its volume and weight to the limit, thus meeting space limitations.

Technical Solution:

  • Sensor: Use iPhone The same CMOS sensor (the specific model is not disclosed, Wired speculates that it is iPhone 15 Pro The same 48 million pixel sensor)

  • Processor: iPhone A-series chips (specific model not confirmed)

  • Format: Supports ProRes Log recording

  • Others: Integrated iPhone battery, lens neutral density filter (ND filter)

  • System: Run customized iOS firmware

In addition, since radio equipment is not allowed inside the F1 racing car, the crew cannot control the camera through conventional wireless technology.

Therefore, Apple has developed a customized iPad Application, connect to the device via a USB-C interface. In this way, filmmakers can control shutter angle, ISO, white balance, frame rate and other parameters through their iPad.

The production team of this film is very luxurious, starring Brad Pitt, directed by Joseph Kosinski, composed by Hans Zimmer, and seven-time F1 world champion driver Lewis Hamilton participated in the production.

Passionategeekz Inquiry learned that the plot of the film focuses on the F1 racing world, and Brad Pitt plays Sonny Hayes, a driver who made his mark in the 1990s, almost ended his career due to a track accident. Thirty years later, he was invited to join the F1 team with a difficult management F1 team, launching the ultimate challenge of saving the team and striking the world championship.
