However, Ford Motor Company’s EcoBoost series engines have been caught in a legal dispute over a potential flaw, and the Ford EcoBoost engine was sued for a class action lawsuit by the owner for accused of having a coolant leak.
According to Passionategeekz, the EcoBoost engine displacement range of 1.5 to 2.0 liters in the lawsuit, and the affected models include the 2013 to 2019 Ford Escape, the 2013 to 2019 Ford Mondeo, the 2015 to 2018 Ford Edge, the 2016 to 2019 Lincoln MKC and the 2016 to 2019 Lincoln MKZ.
The plaintiffs mainly alleged two points in the lawsuit. First, Ford failed to inform the owner of a defect that these engines could cause coolant to leak into the cylinder. Secondly, Ford has not clearly informed the owners of potential safety risks that may arise from this issue.
According to the owner, all affected engines have problems with coolant leaking from the cylinder head into the cylinder. As the coolant continues to leak, the engine coolant level gradually decreases, eventually causing the engine to overheat and may even be damaged to an irreparable level.
In the lawsuit, the plaintiff said: “Ford did not provide a satisfactory solution to the engine defects of these consumers, even if the vehicle is still under warranty. Ford only took some surface, temporary measures, such as installing a coolant level sensor, rather than replacing the engine block.” Although coolant level reminders are always better than engine scrapping, it is obvious that a coolant-free engine is what owners really need.
If the allegations in the lawsuit are true, Ford already knew about the issue before selling these engines. It is worth noting that Ford issued a technical service announcement in 2020, in response to the coolant leakage problem of Ford Mondeo and Eagle, it is recommended to replace the engine short cylinder block and cylinder head gasket.
However, the plaintiff pointed out that even if the engine is replaced, the problem cannot be fundamentally solved because the replaced engine still has the same defects.
