Passionategeekz June 19th news, according to China Shipbuilding Group today, the world’s first full-process ship carbon capture (OCCS) system independently developed by China Shipbuilding Group July 11 was successfully completed on a 14,000 TEU large container ship, and Shanghai Port Group Energy Company and Shanghai Port Group Logistics Co., Ltd.The world’s first ship-to-ship liquid carbon dioxide (LCO₂) connection operation

China Shipbuilding Corporation said that this innovative practice marks China’s first to build a complete ecological closed loop of “carbon dioxide capture – liquefied storage – ship-to-ship connection, unloading and reuse”.Provides a replicable “Chinese solution” for international shipping emission reduction

Faced with the hard constraints of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) net zero emission framework, ship carbon capture technology has become a key path for decarbonization in the shipping industry. The ship carbon capture system independently developed by the Institute of July 11,It has achieved international leading performance with a comprehensive carbon dioxide capture rate of over 80% and a capture purity of 99.9%.

“At the end of April last year, we completed the world’s first full-process ship-shore unloading operation for carbon capture of carbon dioxide in Yangshan Port, but domestic ports currently do not have large-scale supporting carbon dioxide recovery facilities. The ship-strait connection unloading model has high requirements for port infrastructure, such as terminal adaptability and draft restrictions, and insufficient flexibility.” Su Yi, general manager of the Environmental Protection Equipment Division of the 711 Institute, said.

The efficient and safe transport of liquid carbon dioxide is the key to the large-scale application of ship carbon capture technology. The unloading of liquid carbon dioxide in ship to ship has become the key to breaking the deadlock and the problem of marine carbon transfer

“The entire loading and unloading operation involves precise ship position control, complex pipeline connections and pressure management. Any minor operating deviation may bring risks.” According to Su Yi, during the loading and unloading of liquid carbon dioxide in Yangshan Port, the 711 Institute Carbon Catching Group team overcomes a number of technical difficulties, communicates closely with all relevant parties, and finally successfully completes this world’s first practice.

Compared with the ship-to-shore connection model, ship-to-ship connection and unloading technology significantly improves operational flexibility, making it a reality to quickly respond to the carbon dioxide connection and unloading needs of ships in different sea areas, providing innovative solutions for the current situation of global port infrastructure, and also clearing key obstacles for the large-scale application of carbon capture technology in the shipping industry.

Passionategeekz learned from China Shipbuilding Group that since the delivery of the first full-process ship carbon capture system in early 2024, the 711 Institute has successfully completed several domestic and foreign liquid carbon dioxide unloading, realizing the closed loop of carbon dioxide from fuel combustion to recycling and utilization, and achieving the first global deduction of ship CII (carbon strength index) accounting deduction. The liquid carbon dioxide unloaded by the ship to the ship will be transported to the storage and reuse terminals through the transfer ship, substantially reducing the ship’s carbon emissions.

The mature application of ship carbon capture technology will drive the development of carbon capture, transportation, utilization and storage (CCUS)-related industrial chains, and accelerate the green transformation of global shipping.
