[PGz Technology News]According to the latest news from Cui Dongshu, Secretary-General of the China Passenger Car Association, from January to May 2025, global automobile sales reached 37.99 million, of which new energy vehicles sold 7.89 million. This means that the sales proportion of new energy vehicles in a broad sense accounted for 27.7% of the global automobile market in the first five months of 2025, an increase of 1.4 percentage points compared with the full year of 2024. In a narrow sense, the market share of new energy vehicles has reached 20.8%, showing strong growth momentum. Among them, pure electric vehicles account for 13.7%, plug-in hybrid models account for 7.1%, while hybrid models account for 6.9%.

Specifically for the world’s new energy passenger cars, the total sales volume in the first five months of 2025 was 7.72 million units, a year-on-year increase of 33%. In May alone, this number reached 1.74 million vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 29% and a month-on-month increase of 6%. It is worth noting that the growth rate of new energy vehicles in the United States slowed down to 4%, with the cumulative sales of 710,000 vehicles in the first five months. Due to concerns about rising prices due to the upcoming high tariff policies, U.S. sales of new energy vehicles in May were only 146,000, down 7% year-on-year, but increased by 2% month-on-month. In contrast, the European new energy passenger car market performed more positively, with sales reaching 1.4 million units in the first five months of this year, an increase of 260,000 units from the same period last year, an increase of 23%. Preliminary statistics show that Europe’s monthly sales in May were about 270,000 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 22%.

In the global new energy vehicle market, China’s role is particularly critical. In the first five months of 2025, China’s new energy passenger cars accounted for 68.3% of the global market share, especially in May, which further rose to 70.4%, an increase of 3 percentage points year-on-year. In addition, in terms of global increase in new energy vehicles, China accounts for nearly 80%, Germany and France each contribute 4%, and the United States and Türkiye each account for 2%.

China’s independent brand new energy vehicles have also made remarkable achievements in the overseas market. As of May 2025, the sales share of independent brand new energy passenger cars in overseas markets reached 14.8%. Thanks to good performance in exports, this proportion has risen from 9.5% in 2024 to 12.7% in the first five months of 2025.
