[CNMO Technology News]While many car companies are overestimating the demand for the electric vehicle market, BMW has steadily met the needs of different consumers with its diversified layout of fuel vehicles, diesel vehicles, plug-in hybrids and pure electric vehicles. Oliver Zipse, chairman of BMW Group, recently said: “We launched the right product at the right time.” This strategy has made BMW more stable in the electrification transformation. Currently, one of every five BMWs sold is a pure electric model.

However, BMW’s power choices are more than that. In addition to planning to launch a hydrogen fuel cell mass-produced model in 2028, German automotive media Automobilwoche recently reported that BMW is preparing to launch an extended-range electric model – iX5 REx (Range Extender) in 2026, with an estimated comprehensive range of 1,000 kilometers.

It is reported that this BMW iX5 REx will be equipped with a range extended-range system mainly used for electric drive and internal combustion engines for power generation, further solving the current mileage anxiety of pure electric vehicles in the absence of long-distance driving and charging facilities. Although BMW has not confirmed the news yet, it did not deny it when faced with media inquiries, only saying: “We have been analyzing user usage patterns, customer needs and market developments, and evaluating the market potential of multiple technologies.”

It is worth mentioning that in recent years, extended-range technology is gradually returning to the mainstream vision. In 2023, the Ram brand launched the 1500 Ramcharger extended-range pickup truck, and CEO Tim Kuniskis even bluntly stated that other brands will follow up. Now it seems that this trend is coming true. Brands such as Scout, Ford, Jeep all have extended-range product layouts, and even Jeep’s flagship model Wagoneer has been rumored to launch extended-range versions.
