[CNMO Technology News]According to Cui Dongshu, Secretary-General of the China Passenger Car Association, as of the end of May 2025, the national passenger car industry inventory reached 3.45 million vehicles, a decrease of 50,000 vehicles from the previous month, but an increase of 160,000 vehicles compared with the same period last year. This shows that although the total inventory has decreased, it is still at a high level overall.

According to the latest data, China’s automobile sales will gradually decline in the next three months as sales gradually enter a seasonal off-season. Based on the inventory status at the end of May 2025 and the estimates for future sales, existing inventory can support sales demand in the next 54 days, which is 54 days and 51 days compared with the same period in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

What is particularly noteworthy is the performance of the new energy vehicle market. In May 2025, the retail volume of new energy vehicles in the new energy vehicle market was 1.03 million units, a year-on-year increase of 29% and a month-on-month increase of 13%; the cumulative retail volume from January to May reached 4.36 million units, a year-on-year increase of 34.1%. Despite the impact of the Spring Festival holiday, the cumulative growth rate in the first five months still hit a record high in the past three years.

In addition, the export of new energy vehicles has also shown a strong growth trend. In May 2025, the export volume of new energy passenger car manufacturers reached 200,000 vehicles, an increase of 80.9% year-on-year and 5.8% month-on-month; the cumulative export volume from January to May was 789,000 vehicles, an increase of 37.1% year-on-year. Despite the large fluctuations in the external environment, plug-in hybrid models from domestic brands have performed particularly well, becoming an important force in promoting the continued growth of exports since the beginning of the year.

Judging from the wholesale situation of new energy passenger cars manufacturers, the wholesale sales in May 2025 reached 1.216 million units, a year-on-year increase of 34.0% and a month-on-month increase of 8%; the cumulative wholesale volume from January to May was 5.21 million units, a year-on-year increase of 40.0%. This shows that thanks to the positive promotion of retail and export, especially the relatively stable price of new energy vehicles and the positive market sentiment has promoted the growth of overall sales of new energy vehicles in May.
