Anne Shirley – Episode 11

Anne begins her teaching at the Avonlea School and meets challenging students such as the defiant Anthony Pye and the sensitive Paul Irving, who gives her flowers and arouses her interest. At the same time, she founded the village beautification association (Avis) with Gilbert, Diana and other young people to improve Avonlea – initially smiled at by the villagers.

The association’s fundraising campaign leads Anne and Diana to difficult personalities: the pessimistic Eliza Andrews, the back end of Dan Blair (who surprisingly donates) and the freshly baked grandfather Lorenzo White, whose joy leads to a high donation over the grandson. The episode culminates in an embarrassing encounter with Mr. Harrison, whose parrot Anne mocks again as a “redhead” after rejecting her donation.

Meanwhile, Anne’s relationship with her student Paul Irving, whose family background (his father Stephen Irving once left Lavendar Lewis) is discussed. In the final conversation with Gilbert both reveal their goals of life: Gilbert wants to become a doctor to relieve suffering, while Anne wants to “add beauty to life”. Their different, complementary visions mark the beginning of a mature friendship.
