[CNMO Technology News]According to Korean media reports, Alibaba Cloud plans to open a second data center in South Korea to cope with the growth in demand for artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. As a subsidiary of China Alibaba Group, Alibaba Cloud established its first data center in Seoul in March 2022 and announced in June 2024 that it will launch its second data center soon.
Alibaba Cloud said that by setting up a second data center, Alibaba Cloud will provide customers with a more flexible and stable cloud environment, accelerate the innovative application of AI in various industries, and promote the expansion of South Korea’s local digital ecosystem.
Alibaba Cloud entered the Korean market in 2016 and currently plans to provide a series of products optimized for AI applications through its second data center, including cloud-native, big data and database solutions. The company stressed that operating more than two data centers in a country can enhance disaster recovery capabilities.
Alibaba Cloud said that South Korea is its important strategic position, and the second Korean data center is an important reflection of Alibaba Group’s emphasis on South Korea’s market strategy. South Korea is expected to play a key role in the growth of Alibaba Cloud in the Asia-Pacific region.
In addition, Alibaba Cloud responded to concerns about data outflow. Lim Jong-jin, senior solution architect at Alibaba Cloud, said the company has met more than 150 global compliance standards for the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
As companies such as Amazon Cloud Services (AWS), Microsoft (MS) have increased their investment in the Korean market, South Korea is gradually becoming the focus of data center competition. SK Group and AWS plan to build a 100-megawatt (MW) AI-specific data center in the MIPOGU National Industrial Zone of Wusan. AWS also builds its own data center in Incheon, while Microsoft operates the data center in Busan.
