[CNMO Technology News]Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “Godfather of AI”, recently issued a warning on the risks brought about by the development of artificial intelligence. He said that the rapid progress of AI has posed a serious threat to human employment, especially the large number of white-collar positions engaged in “daily intellectual labor” will be the first to be replaced by AI.
In an interview with the YouTube channel The Diary of a CEO podcast, Hinton bluntly pointed out: “For daily intellectual work, AI will replace everyone.” What he refers to as “daily intellectual labor”, including legal assistants, copywriting, administrative support and many other white-collar professions. Hinton pointed out that companies will tend to replace ten employees with one AI assistant to achieve a more efficient and lower-cost operational model.
This is not groundless. In recent months, many companies have laid off employees significantly in the process of reducing operating costs and introduced AI systems to complete some repetitive and clear rules. Even positions such as call centers that rely heavily on manual communication have gradually been replaced by automatic voice systems.
However, Hinton also pointed out that AI will be difficult to compete with positions with complex physical operation capabilities in the short term. He said: “It will take a long time for AI to reach the level of human physical operations.” Therefore, he suggested that those who are worried about being replaced by AI can consider turning to more manual blue-collar professions such as plumbers and electricians, which are still highly safe and irreplaceable.
Hinton also questioned the optimistic statement that “AI will create more jobs.” He believes that as AI gradually takes over knowledge-based jobs, human employment space will shrink, especially junior positions have become increasingly difficult to obtain.
