Passionategeekz June 21 news, technology media Space released a blog post today (June 21), reporting that astronomers used European Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) radio telescopes.The deepest and highest resolution images of the Abell 2255 galaxy cluster were taken at a frequency of 144 MHz and an angular resolution of up to 0.3 angle seconds.
Passionategeekz Note: This cluster consists of 300 to 500 galaxies, about 800 million light-years away from the Earth and spans about 16.3 million light-years. The research team focused on the “radio galaxies” among them, which are driven by supermassive black holes and ejected streams of matter close to the speed of light.
The observation revealed slender filament-like structures ranging from 260,000 to 360,000 light-years long, less than one-tenth the width of the Milky Way. The research team believes that these filamentous structures originate from turbulent motions inside radio galaxies and will eventually mix with gas and dust between galaxies. This discovery provides a new perspective for studying the evolution of radio galaxies and the interaction between supermassive black hole jets and intergalaxy media.
The research team used LOFAR’s Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) mode to conduct 56 hours of observation and generated approximately 140 TB of data.
Our main goal is to use LOFAR-VLBI to detect the filamentous structures at the tail of the Abell 2255 radio galaxy to study its morphological characteristics and understand its origins. ”
