Samsung is once again setting the stage for a summer shakeup in the foldable smartphone space. According to reliable sources, the tech giant has officially begun production of its next-generation foldables—the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7. The development signals that Samsung is on track for an early July 2025 launch, mirroring its previous Unpacked event timeline.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7, Samsung’s book-style foldable, is tipped to run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, a successor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Flip 7, the more compact clamshell device, may take a bold turn with Samsung’s own Exynos 2500 SoC under the hood—indicating a possible diversification in chip sourcing strategies.
Perhaps even more intriguing is the design evolution. The Z Fold 7 is rumored to be significantly slimmer—just 8.22mm when folded, down from the 12.1mm of the Z Fold 6. This would be a major win for portability and user comfort, one of the key criticisms of current-generation foldables.
However, not everything points upward. Reports suggest Samsung has cut production by 40% compared to last year’s models, with 2 million units of the Z Fold 7 and 3 million units of the Z Flip 7 slated for this cycle. This conservative move reflects underwhelming sales from the previous generation, prompting Samsung to re-align its expectations and production efficiency.
Despite these challenges, Samsung remains the market leader in foldable innovation, and its latest moves suggest it’s ready to refine—not just repeat—its approach to flexible phones. The question remains: will slimmer builds, stronger internals, and potentially better pricing be enough to revitalize consumer interest in foldables?
We’ll find out in just a few months.
