A recent datamine of Assassin’s Creed Shadows game files has stirred speculation among fans about the return of multiplayer gameplay—specifically, PvP. While Ubisoft has not made any official announcements, players have discovered internal file names such as “RED_PVP_Maps,” suggesting that a competitive multiplayer mode could be in development or planned for a future update.

The use of “Red” in the file name is particularly noteworthy, as “Red” was the project’s codename before it was officially revealed as Assassin’s Creed Shadows. This discovery has reignited hope that the franchise may be reviving one of its most beloved and long-absent features.

Multiplayer gameplay was once a hallmark of the Assassin’s Creed series. While 2014’s Assassin’s Creed Unity included online co-op missions, the last title to feature proper PvP combat was Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag in 2013. Going back even further, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood in 2010 introduced the franchise’s iconic PvP mode, which quickly became a fan favorite.

Rumors also suggest that Ubisoft is developing a standalone multiplayer-focused title tentatively named Assassin’s Creed: Invictus, though no official details have been shared. In addition to Shadows, Ubisoft is reportedly working on multiple other Assassin’s Creed projects, including the already-teased Assassin’s Creed: Hexe and a remake of Black Flag.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows officially launched on March 20, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Whether PvP will arrive as a post-launch feature or in a separate title remains unclear—but for longtime fans of the series’ competitive multiplayer, this could be a long-awaited return.
