iFixit has officially disassembled Apple’s latest AirPods Pro 3, revealing the internal structure and highlighting just how challenging it is to repair the device. Despite new design changes compared to the AirPods Pro 2, Apple’s latest Pro earbuds continue to face criticism for their lack of repairability.

The teardown revealed that Apple introduced a new foam-filled ear tip design for the AirPods Pro 3. This detail, visible only under a microscope, shows a thin foam layer where the earbuds make contact with the ear canal. Each earbud is equipped with a 0.221 Wh battery, while the charging case includes a single 1.334 Wh battery. Unlike the AirPods Pro 2’s case, which housed two batteries, this updated design contributes to the reduced battery life of 24 hours compared to the previous 30 hours.

Apple also reduced the number of rare earth magnets inside the charging case, but repositioned them to maintain compatibility with MagSafe and Qi 2 wireless charging. While these adjustments help with functionality, repairability remains a major drawback. The internal components of the AirPods Pro 3 are glued together, making disassembly destructive and extremely complex.

According to iFixit, battery replacement on both the earbuds and charging case is nearly impossible without damaging the plastic casing. The adhesive must be melted with heat, and fragile internal cables make safe disassembly unrealistic for most repair shops. Even professional attempts at battery repair would likely result in permanent damage to the product.

Due to these limitations, iFixit awarded the Apple AirPods Pro 3 a repairability score of just 0 out of 10, marking them as one of the least repairable devices in Apple’s lineup. While performance and design enhancements have been introduced, users are left with earbuds that cannot be sustainably serviced when the battery inevitably degrades.
