30% of Microsoft’s New Code Now Written by AI, Says Satya Nadella

Artificial intelligence isn’t just reshaping how we work—it’s increasingly writing the very code behind the tools we use. At Meta’s LlamaCon 2025, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed that up to 30% of code in some of the company’s repositories is now written by AI, a number that continues to climb.

Nadella shared this insight during a public conversation with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, highlighting how Microsoft tracks AI-generated code acceptance rates internally. He noted that AI performs especially well when writing new code, while legacy C++ remains in use but is considered less ideal compared to more recent Python development.

While the use of AI in code generation raises ongoing questions about accuracy, ownership, and long-term maintainability, Nadella remains bullish. He even floated a long-standing ambition: using AI to dissolve the boundaries between Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. With advances in generative AI and auto-coding, he suggested that users might soon begin with a high-level intent and end up with living, dynamic documents that function like software—effectively turning office suites into smart, unified applications.

“Why isn’t Word, Excel, PowerPoint one thing?” he asked rhetorically, noting that AI now makes such integration technically viable. He envisions a future where documents and applications share the same data structure, and user workflows evolve into seamless digital experiences.

Interestingly, while Microsoft’s Copilot AI has plateaued at around 20 million weekly users, it remains a key part of this transformation. In contrast, OpenAI’s ChatGPT boasts around 400 million weekly users, underlining the scale of generative AI’s global reach.

Though neither Nadella nor Zuckerberg discussed potential job impacts or flaws in AI-written code, the Microsoft boss acknowledged the need to rethink development tools and infrastructure to better support AI-driven engineering. Meanwhile, Zuckerberg predicted that within a year, half of Meta’s development could be AI-generated.
